JJ Burnel : The John Robb interview
As we await the annual Stranglers UK tour this autumn we thought it was time to get a quick catch up with the band’s iconic bassist JJ Burnel. Catching him on a quick break from intense rehearsals and a headlining slot at a Cornish festival which he had to dash off to cutting the interview ending JJ Burnel talks about the upcoming Stranglers tour.
It looks like the band have shaken up tye set list again and brought back several surprises and squad songs with more than enough hints that on this tour the band will feature songs not heard for decade amongst the classics. There is also talk of the potential of a new album created from the 150 plus song sketches and mini ideas piled up in the last year and also on the art of songwriting and how to keep creating and staying inspired this many decades into the journey and other Stranglers business and we even got a brief visit from Baz leering like a true Strangler into the screen…
The hardiest of hardy perennials are back and ageing like a fine wine and the annual tour remains a highlight in the gig calendar with this most unique band still adept at pulling of any style of music and somehow Stranglerflyering it into their own unique hybrid. It’s of course always great to get the classics dusted down but the current set highlight is the mighty White Stallion from the band,s current Dark Matters album. Its pulsating apocalyptic death disco is just what the Stranglers were built to play and have an anthem like that this many decades down the line underlines that the band remain a crucial creative force.
The upcoming tour dates are next month and listed below…

A Plea From Louder Than War
Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.
To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital.
