African Head Charge announce 45th Anniversary Tour
Psychedelic dub experimentalists African Head Charge have announced a series of dates to celebrate the bands 45th anniversary.
The group was formed by percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah in 1981 and included a rotating ensemble of musicians including the original members of Creation Rebel, Style Scott of Roots Radics, and Dub Syndicate, alongside Adrian Sherwood (under various guises), other members have included Bruce Smith of Public Image Limited, Skip McDonald and Jah Wobble amongst many others.
Sherwood’s label, On-U Sound released the bands debut My Life in a Hole in the Ground (LTW review) in November 1981, this relationship has continued to this day, the bands most recent release being the album A Trip to Bolgatanga in 2023.
Pulsating with tribal drum beats and chanting from the soul of Africa, African Head Charge fuse together primal rhythms with heavy psychedelic dub, roots reggae and 21st century electronica. The London-based collective has gone on to achieve cult status, creating 13 albums and gracing stages across the world, from Australia and New Zealand to Glastonbury.
Their epic live show features a line-up of world-star performers, fusing together djembes, guitars, drums, keys and vocals with heavy electronic sampling. The collective use this blend of live and electronica to generate an intoxicating soundscape of reggae-inflected drumming, visceral vocals and bottomless, thrumming bass-lines that truly reach to the heart of your being.

A Plea From Louder Than War
Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.
To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
