Old Hat releasing West Country underground bands on limited edition occult lathe cuts.
In October, Old Hat Records, the home of anarcho-punk/hippy crossover band 51st State (covered by us a few times here and here) released a special collection of 3 bands, each limited to a run of 23.
Pressed on whether this was the start of a series, Noah from Old Hat said “once they go it would be cool to hopefully do some further releases” so even if you’re too late for these little gems, this is something to keep an eye on.
Being very much an old skool DIY approach there is no ordering website, you just have to contact 51st State via Facebook or email. There has also been very little in the way of hype, erm, I mean promotion (until now!)
When I enquired as to whether the choice of 23 was part of some occult magick ceremony, Noah would only say “People can express and interpret the 23 concept in different ways but I think it is best when presented with an element of humour, with the approach that it is a bit of an amusing and mischievous game.”
Cast Courts indulge in noise-rock which ranges from a sinister Butthole Surfers nightmare to full on fast hardcore thrash. Project Psyklops uses hip-hop to deliver up some Burroughs inspired mind fuckery. 51st State offer up 3 catchy cuts of their hard-to-pin-down style which channels The Mob and ATV with a much fuller sound than before. All three of these EPs have been well produced and mastered to ensure they properly pop.

A Plea From Louder Than War
Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.
To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
