Macy Gray
New Century Hall, Manchester
24th June 2025

Macy Gray, the Grammy-winning American soul and R&B artist, took to the stage at New Century Hall to mark 25 years since the release of her groundbreaking debut album On How Life Is. Photos captured during the first three songs of her set, these moments offer a glimpse into an evening of genre-blending soul.

The all-seated show gave the evening a close, personal feel, as Macy unfolded a performance rich in soul and energy. Dressed in a vibrant ensemble that reflected her bold personality, she held the room effortlessly, captivating the audience with her magnetic presence and that unique raspy voice. She swayed, strutted, and grinned through a genre-hopping journey, blending jazz, funk, and blues with surprising twists on covers like Radiohead’s Creep.

It was a vivid reminder of why her live performances continue to delight audiences after 25 years. Support came from the engaging Tommy WÁ, who shared that he had flown six hours to be there. His gentle, soulful acoustic set and his warm, understated presence charmed the seated crowd.

A Plea From Louder Than War

Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.

To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
