Refuge, the London-based five piece fronted by Welsh singer and guitarist Joe Corbett, release their new single, Nearly, on October 24th.
Nearly is Refuge’s third single, following their debut, Bored which came out in March. The Ultrasound/Kings of Leon-tinged track being about being frustrated at the way the world is going – prejudices against the colour of someone’s skin and who someone chooses to love or be loved by, the hypocrisy of religions and our world leaders – but also a heartfelt plea for the disaffected. “So you don’t quite fit the norm ..it’s alright/ Because I get so bored, don’t you know this is where we call our home.
The follow up, What If?, a stomper of a track with thunderous drums delivering a glam rock beat accompanied by a driving bass considers whether we could do things a different way and keep the same innocence and acceptance that we have as children.
Nearly is, essentially, the bastard child of Roxy Music’s Virginia Plain, and is an honest account of Joe’s long-term attempts to keep his head above water financially, and a story song about the passage of time in a man’s life. It’s also about appreciating our time on Earth, being thankful for what we have, and never giving up, however tough things get.
All three tracks have all been lifted from Refuge’s debut album, Almost Nearly There, due for release in 2026.
Refuge are Joseph Corbett (vocals, guitars), Andrius Damusis (guitars), Matteo Iachetti (keyboards), Ike Onwuagbu (bass) and Louis Macfarlane (drums) and the band are the very definition of cosmopolitan! They are passionate advocates for the Music Venue Trust, and individual sections of the band give food to the Oasis Hub Waterloo – the centre provides community activities, programmes and workshops – as well as working for non-profit music charities like the Newham Music Trust.
