Jim Jones All Stars once again unleash upon us all their intense, high-octane and evangelical fusion of hard driving rock’n’roll, garage rock, gritty rhythm and blues and gospel through the release of their new live album, Get Down ~ Get With It. And there is no question at all that this electrifying and explosive collection of songs perfectly documents the sound of a band who are pioneering the revival of an age-old rock’n’roll spirit and supercharging it to a whole new and unprecedented level.

It was back in 2022 when the first seeds were being sown for the new rock’n’roll venture by Jim Jones with a batch of new songs being recorded in Memphis, resulting in the release of the first single, It’s Your Voodoo Working, in October of that year. This heralded the birth of Jim Jones All Stars and it was time for the world to wake up again and take note. A whole series of live shows followed as this intense and highly energised wall of sound followed a relentless path across uncharted waters, with their debut album Ain’t No Peril arriving in glorious sonic technicolour in September 2023 to further cement their position within the epicentre of the rock’n’roll world.

Fast forward to 2025, following on from some prestigious support slots for the likes of The Black Crowes and Ginger Wildheart, and we now get the release of a live album Get Down ~ Get With It which documents their live performances over these past couple of years. As Jim explains, “Get Down ~ Get With It is a bookend of where the band is at right now and it’s a cool way to mark the end of this chapter of the band before we release our sophomore album in 2026.”

As Marc Riley so aptly pointed out during one of the All Stars BBC6 radio sessions, Jim Jones has “something of a reputation” for “always being in one of the best rock’n’roll bands around.” This is as true as ever with this new band who combine the raw energy of Little Richard from that early classic rock’n’roll era with the hard hitting and powerhouse delivery of the likes of MC5 and Stooges, whilst also infusing a whole heap of soul. Jim is an artist who has always been steeped in old school rock’n’roll traditions, with an attitude to match which exudes through his always commanding stage presence, and there is little doubt that this shines very brightly throughout this outstanding live album.

As the needle hits the first groove, we hear the band make it on stage amidst a cacophony of noise as the drums pound, the saxes wail, the keys twinkle and the guitars roar with Jim exclaiming “Get down, get with it” and tenor sax player Stuart Dace announcing their arrival. The impact is immediate and intense and gives us an insight into what is to follow over the coming hour or so as the crunching backbeat of Cement Mixer launches a sonic landslide into the darkest corners of our mind. This epic blast of bump and grind positively steamrollers the performance into action and, with barely a pause for breath, we hear Jim declaring “Ain’t no smoke without fire” as the fuzz drenched guitar of Carlton Mounsher and blur of the manic fingerwork on Elliot Mortimer’s keyboard heralds another Revue classic in Burning Your House Down.

The gritty and groove heavy Gimme The Grease keeps the pulsing saxes of Stuart Dace and Tom Hodges up front and centre as Aidan Sinclair on drums and Gavin Jay on bass keep a hold on the rudder of a monstrous beat as the funk and soul vibe kicks into overdrive. We get only a brief momentary respite through the piano driven Parchman Farm which plunders Bukka White’s shuffling delta bluesy beat dating back to the 40’s, with Stuart again taking the lead on tenor sax before it explodes into a climactic ending.

New song Let You Go has a real vintage feel which drips with soul-fired power as it swings and sways through a trade off between the guitars and saxes which inevitably bring it front and centre into the present day, very much alive and kicking. This continues right through into Goin’ Higher which Jim attacks with an unbridled energy and force which simply cannot be ignored as he screams out “get your hands up against the wall” – and in this mood who is going to argue with that!? With the keys pushed to the limits of endurance, its another wild ride which shifts gears in its final passage as the saxes wail and the deep grooves get totally entrenched into your inner soul.

Soul Trader follows in a similar vein as it delves back into the Thee Hypnotics songbook and the foot pushes down hard on the accelerator of this relentless garage infused rock’n’roll mine train. If you are not on board with this right now, then you really ain’t been listening! The fractured rhythms of I Want You (Any Way I Can) morph into a hook laden classic from Ain’t No Peril as Carlton and Jim trade guitar runs through the tight groove driven by the bass and drums, whilst Elliot’s keys dance in the foreground. At this point in the proceedings, dancing is simply not an option, it’s a necessity wherever you may be listening to this album.

Troglodyte simply oozes with the monstrous groove of dirty funky caveman rock through this cover of a song by the Jimmy Castor Bunch dating back to the early 70’s, with the whole band in total communion with the unholy racket that ensues as the song draws to its conclusion. After another brief respite through the soul-drenched saxes which infuse the mournful Lover’s Prayer, the All Stars waste no time in launching back into total sonic overdrive as Aidan takes us over into the dark side of our minds with a scorching version of the Revue’s Rock’n’Roll Psychosis, before Elliot leads us into a high-velocity take of the epic Princess And The Frog. This really is the business end of the set which makes no excuses and holds no prisoners.

Shakedown is every bit the epic psychedelic garage rock classic, again from the Thee Hypnotics songbook, with its incendiary mix of all that was great about the likes of the MC5, the Stooges and The Cramps all thrown into one feverish and evangelical mix. And it doesn’t stop there as the dynamic garage rock infused classic by Eddie Floyd, Big Bird, rattles yet more cages with its chugging guitar rhythms, driving bass line and wild horns before the set comes to a momentous close with an incendiary version of the Revue’s 512.

Jim Jones All Stars are an unstoppable force who deliver an explosive live show and this live album proves beyond any doubt that this expanded unit allows the band to broaden its sound and delve deeper into the legacy that comes from Memphis and New Orleans thereby giving the songs more soul, groove and depth than ever before, whilst losing nothing from the intensity and ferocity of their rock’n’roll roots. But make no mistake, Jim Jones All Stars are no nostalgia trip. Get Down ~ Get With It is a full-on aural assault which heralds a true revival of the age old rock’n’roll spirit, celebrating the glorious legacy which fuels the music whilst redefining it in the 21st century and supercharging it to a whole new and unprecedented level.
